The Smith Ridge Garden is a modest, but carefully executed project in New Canaan CT. The garden enclosure itself is only 12' x 24', but makes use of its six wooden raised beds for a year's worth of organic food and flower production.
White cedar posts topped with hand-turned finials from a workshop in Massachusetts are inset with cross bracing and stainless steel wire mesh for training and trellising plants. The garden's border is filled with perennial and annual flowers that attract pollinators to the vegetables and fruit growing inside. A permeable, bio-degradable landscaping fabric suppresses weeds beneath the locally quarried gravel that lines the pathways. The wood enclosure and raised beds are untreated to allow for a gradual weathering and patina, and ensure no toxic byproducts are leached into the plants within.
